  Three Rivers of Tears

The story begins in 1970s Calcutta, where a young lady, Binapani, is sucked into a revolution. Through idealism and tragedy, her story and those of others unfold, stretching across the wide canvas of the South Asian subcontinent. Binapani’s dream moves through many lives and finally finds realization.

At the background is the story of the birth of the three nations that splintered out of colonial India. The lives of the characters move within the landmark events of post-independence India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, but their sources are traced back in time through history and oral narrative and brought forward to the present. The characters represent aspects of the diverse cultures of the subcontinent and the novel is richly flavoured with parables from folklore, revelations from sacred texts, legends and mythologies.
• Will Binapani’s fire die with her?
• Will it kindle other lives?
• What will it take to rebuild fractured homes?
• Will it be a play of circumstances?
• The united action of many people?
• Or a single person chosen by destiny?
• Is it just a thundering cloud or will it also rain?

  An Excursion of Insight

Sonam Dorji has come to India under a scholarship from the Royal House of Bhutan. Seeped in the ethics of Buddhism, he witnesses conflicts while experiencing college life like everyone else in his batch. He finds a nurse for his broken heart in his lab partner, Sarika and falls in love with her.

Sonam is shocked and perturbed by the happenings at his college: the suicide of a fellow student that becomes history in no time and some intoxicated seniors of the college beating up his Bhutanese friends on racist grounds. By the end of the day, he is informed of an academic backlog for no valid reasons and the need for him to repeat the semester.

Deceived by the professor’s fake promise, Sonam leads to the bottom of the River Barak where he could kill himself. His college mate Salil leads the protests following Sonam’s suicide. It is thus the story of a system revolutionized, a divide, a community rejuvenated and a friend lost. Sonam’s retreat is later discovered with the story taking an altogether different turn.

Anything for Friends but Sometimes…It Simply Depends…

Never propose to a girl via SMS or email or letter. Propose to her face to face. In writing, you leave behind evidence against yourself. Verbally, you can show your emotions and most importantly, you can run from your own statement without leaving any evidence. A proposal should be like a lady’s skirt; long enough to cover the essentials, short enough to keep it interesting. Six friends from an engineering college in Patiala have a similar story to tell. They rocked their four years of college life with their own rules in everything. They were free birds and no college norms or rules could chain them until they became the victims of circumstances and bitterness that rolled in their lives.

  Online @ Offline

Online @ Offline is a novel that is all about life— life in its manifold varieties, its magnificence, its superciliousness, its morbidity, its dampness and also its flowering glory and triumphant joy. As one moves on, one realizes that each one of us has actually dual lives: one Online and the other Offline; if the online world refers to the virtual world and the world of mind, the offline world is the real one, the physical world with its share of ups-and-downs. "Life ...can never be tragedy.. because the would turn everything meaningless... it could never be a comedy even, for that would make life utterly ridiculous... Life, is only a journey which is true... both online and offline... both in real terms and unreal ones... in dreams and non dreams..." as analysed in the novel towards the end.

These two worlds interplay all through one’s life and produce an intricate web of emotions and situations.

This is a story of love, hope and pining, self-discovery, helplessness, belonging all at the same time.

  From Where I See

Ajay meets his childhood friend Shruti on a social networking site. He finds her struggling with intrapersonal, interpersonal, inter-social and inter-religious conflicts. Eventually the conflicts killed her. Police could solve the case but will it prevent hundreds of Shrutis from getting killed? How long will we aim ‘who’ killed, more important is to find out ‘what’ killed. Till we don’t address this issue many Shrutis will keep on getting killed. We need to cure the disease not only the symptoms.
This book is an effort of the author to find the root cause and probable remedies of these conflicts, exploration of hundreds of pertinent questions like "why in one religion it becomes so easy to get volunteers to blow themselves up and others for the sake of religion? Does the religion divide or unite? Have the immature and wrong interpretations of female emancipation led to 13 times rise in divorce rates in last 5 years?"
It’s not only a book; it’s the path to a revolution, it’s a journey towards a Utopian world. If you are open minded, have courage to accept truth and have a desire to change the world; then be a part of the change. Let’s take our first step to build a road to this Utopian dream.

The book brings out clearly the inherent malaise of religious bigotry in the society. By emphasizing on the Oneness of God and universality of the essence of religions, it strongly advocates the need for religious tolerance and harmony amongst all religions of the world. Through the characters that are so common in our daily life, the book touches upon the subtleties of human nature which is often in conflict with itself. The narrative establishes that if one were to seek truth as dictated by one’s conscience, it would bring immeasurable solace and comfort.

A Match Made in Heaven : A 2000-year Old Love Story (The Legend of an Indian Princess who Became the Queen of Korea)

Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh is considered the birthplace of Lord Rama and it is a sacred pilgrimage centre for Indians. Most people, however, are unaware that most Koreans consider Ayodhya as their ‘maternal’ home. Every year, about hundreds of South Korean tourists visit Ayodhya to pay tributes to their legendary queen, Hae Hwang-ok who was born in Ayodhya as Princess Suri Ratna. According to historical research, Princess Suri Ratna from Ayodhya travelled to Korea on sea and married King Kim Suro of the Karak clan in 48 AD. Both India and South Korea, in an attempt to commemorate the legend and forge closer ties, have agreed to build a large monument dedicated to Suri Ratna at Ayodhya. The narrative of the story builds up the needed linkages between India and Korea as was desired by Prime Minister Narender Modi during his visit to South Korea in May 2015.

21 Grams is an assortment of twenty-one short stories that centre around powerful feelings of guilt, loneliness, doubt, among others, that lurk in the obscure corners of human consciousness, often unacknowledged or unaccepted. The confessions of a wife, the unconventional longings of a lonely man, the thirst of an unrequited soul, or even the refreshing simplicity of a child’s perception; the firm-footed plots blur every distinction between reality and fiction leaving readers wavering between belief and disbelief, faith and scepticism, confidence and uncertainty.

  Like A Psalm...

Like a Psalm... is the translation of the Malayalam novel Oru Sankeertanam Pole by the renowned novelist Perumpadavam Sreedharan, based on the events of a crucial month in Fyodor Dostoevsky’s life, unfolding in sixteen chapters. He is tricked by the publisher Stellovsky into signing a contract that would have compelled him to forfeit the royalties of all his works if he hadn’t completed a novel and handed it over in one month’s time. As he finds it impossible to finish actually writing the novel, The Gambler, in the prescribed time, he employs the twenty-year-old Anna as his stenographer. Dostoevsky, a hard drinking gambler and a pathetic epileptic, is quite a handful for the young Anna. Finally, she learns to love the writer unconditionally, to the point of deciding to marry him; her presence of mind saves the situation. Like a Psalm... has made publishing history in Malayalam – it has run into more than eighty editions till date, since its publication 24 years ago in 1993, with more than 2,50,000 copies sold, which is a record in Malayalam literature. The novel has won several prestigious awards, and has been praised by critics, scholars and eminent personalities.

Breeze in the Old Building and Other Stories

This collection of twenty five stories is her maiden attempt at venturing into Magic Realism but she has given her own interpretation to the term and created Breeze in the Old Building, The Tree, The Little Woman at the Kiln and The Old Man on the Hill. The stories depict especially a world of her own where contrary spaces and characters and times can freely mix, in an often Indian landscape upheld by beautiful and ugly images and powerfully vast and lush descriptiveness, along with touches of playfulness, seriousness, didacticism and whimsy. The Lamb is metaphorically tragic in orientation. The Nose is semi-humorous in its study of obsession and The Giant Mole is Kafkaesque as is, to a lesser extent, Too Long a Sacrifice and even The Court of Law. She confesses to have an abiding interest in Kafka’s work and her stories have impression of Kafka in them.

The Unclaimed Luggage and Other Stories

LIFE, with its crazy swings of emotion from the jocular to sombre, from hilarity to downright sadness, from ecstasy to desperation, is like a mad roller-coaster ride. This exquisite collection of eighteen short stories, presenting a plethora of various emotional ranges, depicts the rough-and-tumble life at its best. There are funny stories and sad. Some of the stories are written with a delightful tongue-in-the-cheek style. There are tales of woe and dilemma, that may be somewhat thought provoking as well. The handful of ghost stories that are thrown in are regular spine-chillers, even for the most sceptic readers.

In the line of his duty, the author had travelled widely all though the length and breadth of the state of West Bengal both rural areas and the metro city. This is reflected in the settings of the stories.

Fly on the Wall and Other Stories

In her debut book Fly on the Wall and Other Stories, author and civil servant, Shubha Sarma examines different facets of life’s narrative with detachment, precision and compassion. The subjects range from the up-market, urban settings to the depths of rural Odisha and areas of civil strife and deep social unrest. The narrative strings together fretful house-wives, over-imaginative teenagers and men and women in the sunset of their lives. There is Dipankar, yearning for Assam and returning to discover that he is a stranger in his own land and the beautiful Uma, mysteriously killed and awaiting justice; there is Arun craving for parental affection and Shikha, defying social mores. They are people that one encounters every day on the bus, the metro and at times, the mirror. Each story is uniquely crafted with an ingenious sense of structural balance. As a whole, this assortment of tales with a twist brings to life the realities and contradiction of India and makes it an enchanting collection of highly readable short stories.

"A compelling read, overflowing with acutely-observed, cleverly-plotted, artlessly-told stories that hold your attention from the first to the last, Fly on the Wall marks a remarkable debut by a gifted storyteller of undoubted promise. I look forward to more from her pen."

--Dr. Shashi Tharoor

"This intriguing debut collection of short stories displays craft, discipline and narrative strength."

  Blood Rain and Other Stories

Blood Rain and Other Stories contains fifteen stories that explore life situations embedded in contemporary reality marked by violence, selfishness, insensitivity, anxiety, corruption and revenge.

They are also alive to the presence of love and forgiveness, though rarely, in people who may have no reasons to possess them, in the eyes of the world. They vary in their tone from the serious, tragic and contemplative to the satiric and sardonic. While a number of them are portrayed on a realistic canvas, some of them verve into the fantastic and bizarre. The author has sought to set most of the stories in the ethos of Kerala to which he belongs.

  A Box of Stolen Moments

This collection of contemporary short fictions offers a kaleidoscopic view of life in all its charms, vagaries, humour and pain. These are not autobiographical pieces but the emotions and feelings that go into the making of a story by blowing up a small situation or a chance remark are real.

The stories mirror social changes and the process of social evolution. They bear witness to the sad yet vibrant existence of women – the pain of separation sung through folk songs; the agony of a woman who questions her own decision; a woman trying to find a solution to her mid-life crisis. Some of the stories take a humorous dig at life while some others offer a serious view.

  Scream & Other Urban Legends

This collection of short stories will take you by surprise. Each one is unique, experimental, minimalist and together they explore a range of themes. The stories become an explosive deconstruction of sorts or an erudite construction as you read them yet sometimes are neither. From obsessed sculptors, lyrical relationships that refuse to go anywhere and self- exploratory narratives to silhouettes looming from deep green ponds, the writing offers a fresh look at the genre itself.

'Soul-mates' defines the connect between two childhood friends, Mira and Kusuma, in spite of the orthogonal surprising turns taken by their individual life.

In 'Context', a workplace friendship with Som, Kabir and Aman impacts Rituraj's promises to his wife.

'My World' finds Rumi navigating the pulls of family, career and self.

Violet is the Colour of My Heart

In Violet is the color of my heart, Jinia Mukerjee captures complex human emotions emanating from everyday experiences and relationships. Most of the stories are set against the backdrop of France. They articulate strong diasporic voices, particularly of women and children, their longings for love and acceptance, their emotions and sensitivities around issues of multiculturalism, exile and, ultimately, their resilience.

One finds in them impulses that transcend all realms of cultural diversity and at once speak across continents. A keen observer of subtleties in human behaviour, Mukerjee's treatment of her themes is intensely visual, the personality of each of her characters woven in several layers. Her elegant prose infuses humour and emotion into the stories, effortlessly drawing readers into their compelling worlds.

  Not Just Another Story

Tangled relationships, life’s contradictions, social injustices, psychic complexities, and subliminal drives are the subjects of the stories. The protagonists grapple with the oppressive forces to evolve a paradigm for living, ending up defeated or scarred, at times. The young man’s rage against his adulterous father, the Adivasi child, Bhera’s revenge on the Zamindar for his mother’s rape and death, Banno’s suicide to save her lover from AIDS, and the struggles of the other protagonists generate empathy and pathos and show that poetic justice is a myth or at best a mere chance.

A Cup of Coffee with a Bunch of Tales

Yet another venture from the story teller of north Malabar. Most of these tales are set in Kalloor, which had been the setting for the author’s debut novel Monsoons in Malabar. While some among these fourteen stories discuss surrealistic experiences of the central characters, a few harp on struggles for existence in a heartless world. Some deal with the fallout of sensual relations outside the gambit of matrimony. A few rely on folklore and mythology to punctuate the thematic drift of the narratives.

Thirteen Loops : Tales from Kalahandi

Where there is a forest, there must be adventure. There must be little feet with minds like Hummingbirds, ever on the move. There must be pug marks that bring to mind stripes of fire and night that once ruled the jungle. The Karlapat Sanctuary in Kalahandi district of Odisha brims with the munificence of Nature as bubbling streams criss-cross a friendly gradient and lush, rolling hills smile with yellow mustard, warm like the sun. Come explore the wilds and villages of this ancient land through thirteen tales and let them awaken your bond with Nature.

Cinera Utthana 1978-2008 : Kibhabe Paribartanera Katha Bhebechila = China Emerging 1978-2008 : How Thinking About Business Changed

Bengali translation of the English language edition of China Emerging 1978-2008 : How Thinking About Business Changed. The ascent of China’s economy over the past thirty years may be one of the more remarkable happenings in human history. Few understand it. Those outside China consider the massive changes a mystery. Those inside China have been challenged with taking more than 1.3 billion people from an agrarian existence into the modern world, and in the face of complex economics involving extreme conflicts of interest. Nobody ever did it before; nobody will ever do it again. Given the convulsive upheavals required, the difficulty of the task has been, and remains, hard to imagine. This book describes those upheavals and that process over the years from 1978 to 2008. It represents a remarkable achievement in condensing a welter of events and changes down to the bare essentials. In summing up a period of history, it also serves as a query about what is to come next. Where are the convulsive changes leading, not only for China, but for the world. Every stretch of history has its own internal logic. The reader of this book may be confronted with a more “real” China than he has known before. Under the surface ripples, diverging streams, uneven tumult, he may discern the middle of the channel, that greater internal logic at work. It represents the flow of a people, quite an ancient nation of people, coursing with all vigor, all courage, all hope, toward an uncertain future.

  Resurrection : A Woman Reborn

"This is an anthology of poems on woman in English.

This is the story of an everyday woman who we see around us every now and then. This is a short collection of thoughts of women who build lives around the husband and his wishes. This is done willingly and happily. In fact this gives her immense satisfaction. She is so busy building a family and dreaming of a home that she’ll one day spend her old age in, that she misses the warning signals and ignores her own intuitive feeling. Her family, her home, that’s her existence and she revels in it. And then, suddenly, unexpectedly, she’s told she’s no longer needed. The reasons given vary but are unimportant. The effect is the same, he walks away and she keels over. Caught unawares at crossroads she gasps and sputters

.

This is when she realises that she has to go on. There are obligations she must fulfil and tasks she must complete. Her family and friends rally around her and then, like a true warrior, she battles the demons inside and around her. She looks up to find new horizons and at daybreak she promises herself a new rainbow. And this rainbow is hers alone.

Meghnaadbadh Kabya : An illustrated bilingual poetic presentation of the classic epic in Bengali and English

This is an illustrated bilingual poetic presentation in Bengali and translation in English of the great epic “Meghnaadbadh Kabya” by one of the greatest of Bengali poets, Michael Madhusudan Dutt.

Based on the epic Ramayana by Valmiki, the story revolves round the cowardly slaying of unarmed Meghnaad by Lakshmana, the brother of Rama, whose wife, Sita had been abducted by Ravana, the Rakshasa King of Lanka and the father of Meghnaad. The epic opens with Ravana being devastated at the fall of Rakshasa Prince Birbahu in the hands of Rama, the Prince of Ayodhya, whose invading army was gradually laying the valour of Lanka to waste. The story unfurls along the course of this Great War and ends in a heart rending scene of the last rites of Meghnaad and his wife Pramila, who entered her husband’s pyre. It is a complete epic in nine Cantos. Unlike the popular versions of the Ramayana, Meghnaad is depicted here as a patriot, a loving husband and a dutiful son. The protagonist is Ravana, painted as a villain in the Ramayana, but shown here to be a responsible, valiant king. The influence of western, especially Greek classical epics is evident in this epic poem by Michael Madhusduan Dutt.

And the Gypsy Learned to Fly

And the Gypsy Learned to Fly is the autobiographical journey of Dnyaneshwar Mulay. The voyage begins from a small village on the Maharashtra-Karnataka border and extends beyond the corridors of power in Delhi and high tables of diplomacy overseas. The narrative goes beyond what an individual goes through in life. In a subtle way, it traces the journey of socio-eco-political changes that have occurred in independent India. Dnyaneshwar Mulay believes that the true foundation of nation building comes through education. He has described how education has been the primary change agent for our nation. A well-known Marathi Literary magazine Antarnad has included its original Marathi book Mati pankha ani akasa in the '100 best Marathi books of the 20th Century.'

Beyond the Barriers, New Horizons : Education of Women in Bengal (1800-1900)

In the beginning of the nineteenth century, female education in Bengal was largely limited to customary practices drawn from ancient texts. In the same century, the East India Company and later the British Crown and the Christian missionaries operating in India addressed the unprecedented issues of education including female education. These occurrences impinged upon the indigenous avant-garde leaders, along with women themselves, to further progress in female education. In a reader-friendly manner, the chapters show how the trajectory of these events eventually led to a gradual development of higher education.

In this historical progression, Krishna Lahiri narrates how the great changes were brought about in Bengali society. This well-documented book presents the first women professional writers, poets, journalists, teachers, administrators and doctors at the end of the century.

Memorable Memories of Bhutan : Land of the Drukpas

These are some true stories from Bhutan, the Land of Thunder Dragon. Raw stories served on the platter without a pinch of salt, sugar or spice in them. Facts are stranger than fiction. I never felt it so strongly as in Druk Yul. The valleys in East Bhutan looked like an idyllic landscape painting. So are the stories – perfect, complete in themselves that do not need any brush of extra shade or colouring in them.

Ripe, juicy fruits falling down right into the hands of the path-walkers. So are they offered to the readers – fresh and juicy with the flavour of the trees and the flowers, the air and the sky, the streams and the rivers and the valleys and the mountains where they grew and blossomed!
